CAMP CASEY, South Korea — Second place a year ago, a championship this year?

That’s what 8th U.S. Army sports director Tom Higgins hopes Team Korea can do two months from now when it competes in the U.S. Army Ten-Miler Oct. 2 in Washington.

“Our team is outstanding,” Higgins said after Saturday’s 8th Army Ten-Miler race here, which featured five returning members of last year’s second-place men’s team and one from the runner-up women’s squad.

In addition to Paul Lancaster, Samuel Volkman, Clinton Mercer, Marty Munchow and Steve Anderson, Team Korea welcomes All-Army marathoner Keith Matiskella and Mike White of Fort Bragg, N.C., to the squad.

Women’s returnee Sylvia Bennett is joined by newcomer Elsa Bullard, who ran for the U.S. Army Europe team a year ago. Higgins said one women’s berth remained open and he would try to fill it Monday.

“We will be right in the hunt” for a shot at the team championship, Higgins said.

Saturday’s 8th Army Ten-Miler included a record field of 207 runners.
