CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa – They were the poster child of futility from 2005-07. Now, 3rd Marine Logistics Group can call itself the Marine Western Pacific Regional Soccer Tournament’s team of the decade.

Led by Most Valuable Player Tinashe Ngwenya and backstopped by perennial All-Tournament keeper Austin Gagner, 3rd MLG blanked Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni of Japan 3-0 in Saturday’s championship match at Foster Field 1.

It was 3rd MLG’s third straight tournament title, after losing three times the previous three years. Third MLG reached the tournament final for the eighth time in the last 10 years, winning it five times.

Gagner and Ngwenya will be joined by teammate Bryan Perez as 3rd MLG sent a tournament-high three of six players selected to the All-Marine tryout camp at Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C. The All-Marine team then plays in the All-Armed Forces tournament Oct. 18-25 at Hurlburt Air Force Base, Fla.
