Lauren Shaw represented the Army as an outfielder for the women’s softball team at West Point earlier this decade. Now as a shortstop for Camp Casey/Area I in South Korea, she has a chance to do it again.

The four-year Army starter was one of 11 South Korea-based soldiers, four women and seven men, selected to attend the All-Army softball tryout camps Aug. 20 through Sept. 12.

Shaw, of Camp Casey, will be joined by three of her teammates, outfielders Krista Jones of Camp Red Cloud and Kathleen Hedges and Jihrleah Showman of Camp Hovey, in the women’s camp at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pa.

All are first-time camp selections. They’re part of a squad that’s 36-10, a league-best 15-1 in the Korea Traveling League and champion of the Firecracker Shootout over the Fourth of July weekend on Okinawa. Showman was chosen as the MVP of that tournament.

For the men’s camp at Fort Benning, Ga., Elmer Mason of Yongsan Garrison was selected for the second straight year as the All-Army team captain.

Mason, nine times All-Army, is joined by six-time All-Army outfielder Andre Elder of Camp Carroll.

First-time men’s picks include Robert Grasse of Carroll, Desmond Ray and William "Buck" Buchanan of Camp Humphreys, Yongsan’s Russell Bruce and Ralph Hodgdon of Osan Air Base.

More selections are to be announced before the start of camp, All-Army sports officials said.

Players chosen for the All-Army team will play in the All-Armed Forces tournament Sept. 14-19 at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla. Army’s men and Air Force’s women will defend their titles in the tournament.

All-Armed Forces team selections then move on to the Amateur Softball Association national championships Sept. 25-29 at Oklahoma City.
