From Army Captain to America’s youngest professional sports CEO. That’s the trajectory Matt Caldwell ’10 JD, MBA achieved after translating his military leadership into business success at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
After five years as a U.S. Army Captain, including combat operations in Iraq and peacekeeping missions in Kosovo, Caldwell earned a Bronze Star Medal, NATO Kosovo Military Medal, and Iraq Campaign Medal. But making the transition from the military to the boardroom required guidance.
He found that in Kellogg’s JD-MBA program, which allows students to earn both a Juris Doctor and a Master of Business Administration simultaneously. Today, Caldwell is a championship-winning sports executive who led the Florida Panthers to two Stanley Cups. He now serves as CEO of the NBA’s Timberwolves and the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx.
“The military taught me about teamwork, leading by example and never abandoning the mission,” Caldwell says. “Kellogg gave me the business framework to deploy those principles in the corporate world.”
“Veterans possess qualities that make them a natural fit for business leadership,” says Greg Hanifee, Kellogg Associate Dean of Degree Programs. “They’ve managed teams under pressure, made critical decisions with limited information, and demonstrated unwavering commitment to mission success. With the right support, veterans can successfully leverage these skills to excel in executive roles.”
The Matt Caldwell Veterans Program
The Matt Caldwell Veterans Program at Kellogg offers comprehensive support for veterans transitioning to business leadership through three key pillars:
Career Support
Veterans receive career education, job recruitment assistance, and interview preparation designed specifically for the military-to-business transition. Through the Kellogg Veterans Association, current students connect with career resources while prospective students receive application guidance and support.
Community
Veteran alumni mentor students throughout their MBA journey, offering guidance on career goals and business challenges. Military families receive community and support through Kellogg’s Joint Ventures Club for spouses and partners.
Financial Support
Scholarship funding reduces financial barriers, while Kellogg’s participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program delivers up to $22,000 annually in grants matched by the VA—often covering full tuition costs for eligible veterans.
“Kellogg was instrumental in my development after military service,” Caldwell says. “I hope my story inspires other veterans to pursue that same successful transition.”
