I am an Army veteran. I am currently a Department of the Army civilian and also the commander of the local VFW. I just read the Jan. 26 letter “Winters deserved more ink.” In it the writer expresses [disappointment] that, in Stars and Stripes, there was hardly a mention of Maj. Dick Winters’ passing on Jan. 2 and that it did not occur until more than a week later.
Please understand that, according to several published reports, that is the way Maj. Winters, the man whose World War II service was featured in the miniseries “Band of Brothers,” wanted it. He wanted a private, unannounced funeral. His funeral was held Jan. 8.

How to keep boots on ground
The airman who wrote about his worn-out boots in “Poking holes in acupuncture” (letter, Jan. 25) should know that enlisted personnel still get a clothing allowance (I’m pretty certain), but perhaps he should take time to read about how to care for his current boots first.
