[I read] your article concerning the government-issue ink pen ("Government-issue Skilcraft pen has a storied past," April 22). It also has been used for many other things, such as measuring a female sailor’s nail length. Female sailors can have nails that are only one-quarter of an inch from the tip of their finger. I’ve always used that as a quick measure to make sure my nails were within regulations.
Also, as an aviation electronics technician, I’ve used the government-issue ink pen to straighten a bent pin in a connector.
I have a feeling if you asked other sailors, you’d find that the government-issue ink pen has been used for many other things besides just writing.
