I know I’m going to make somebody upset with this, but I don’t care. The tobacco ban in the military is garbage. It’s another freedom being stripped away from those who defend it.
In Misawa, Japan, we have more issues with alcohol than anything. They already banned smoking on my balcony in my tower, but they won’t ban drinking when it has caused so much negative attention to the base. My smoking never destroyed a house, caused major property damage or hurt anyone. I’m sure there are more health issues with drinking excessively than with my smoking a cigarette two or three times a day.
I think military leadership needs to rethink its policy on tobacco and focus more on individuals who depend on alcohol to get through their life. I like to have a beer every once in a while. But the irresponsible people who drink and drive and get caught should be discharged from the military. Even fighting while intoxicated should earn you a one-way ticket home.
Tobacco is the enemy? I’m thinking not so much.
