Russia’s many time zones
In reference to "Too many hours in the day?" (article, Nov. 14): Do politicians not know that the time zones are created to have the hours in each time zone match the sun’s occurrence over that time zone? This is a physical phenomenon based on the Earth’s relationship to the sun and can’t be legislated. If Russian politicians were to move Russia to one longitude, then it would be in one time zone and their problem cured, but this isn’t likely to happen.
To change the number of time zones to try to "fix" problems caused by the size of the country would only cause worldwide confusion for many years, as well as demoralize Russia’s own people. Let’s hope the Russian politicians are smarter than that.
