Concerning homosexuality in the military, I have seen letters both pro and con on this issue and, frankly, as I stated in a previous letter ("Gays will serve openly one day," Oct. 16, 2009), [gays serving openly] is coming.

Being in the military is not a democracy. Although some think homosexuality is immoral because of religious beliefs, gay people have a right to choose their own lifestyle. For gay supporters to say religious people are bigoted is incorrect. To say that is saying religion encourages bigotry (this belief was not spawned from hatred).

The only issue I see is when to implement [the new policy]. I think the secretary of defense’s plan is right on.

There are too many issues on the plate with two wars going on. Once the troops get settled back home, a comprehensive implementation plan can be completed.

Remember, the issue is not just allowing them to serve, a bigger issue is how we will openly support them and their dependent families, what benefits they will get, what changes to the Uniform Code of Military Justice are needed, what force structure changes need to happen (i.e. counselors not associated with the chaplain service), and how this all will be paid for.
