I wish to commend American Forces Network for coverage of an up-and-coming sport. Curling is played on the international level by 45 countries that belong to the World Curling Federation. The United States Curling Association has 156 member curling venues. Many are close to military bases and many active-duty, reserve and retired military personnel are members.

The USCA Adapted Curling Committee has, over the past few years, worked with veterans groups including Veterans Affairs hospitals and Walter Reed Army Medical Center to assist disabled warriors and veterans in becoming involved in this sport of strategy and athleticism.

In the upcoming Paralympics we will see what great athletes our fellow countrymen are.

Curling rinks are located near bases in the U.S., ranging from Texas, Arizona, North Carolina, California and most northern states. Also, there are many curling rinks near bases in Europe, Japan and South Korea. There is a nice curling rink not far from our base in Vicenza, Italy.

The writer of “Curling dominates prime time” (letter, Feb. 24) stated we should not see curling since there are no facilities on military bases. What a bore the Olympics would be without viewing bobsled, luge, skeleton, alpine skiing, snowboarding, etc. And there are not ice rinks on most bases, so we would miss that sport as well. And I’ve never seen a ski jump on a base either.

To learn the rules of curling, or to get involved, contact the USCA or e-mail: armedforcescurling@yahoo.com.
