Five Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadets from Yokota High School will attend the Army JROTC Academic Challenge at George Mason University from Sept. 28 to 30.

The team of Jamie Myree, Tracy Weimer, Neil Neill Lapurga, Robert Rodell and Mathew Saucedo participated in two previous rounds in January and February 2007 before qualifying to go to the finals, according to a Department of Defense Dependents Schools press release.

“Yokota was the only school outside the continental United States that became a finalist,” DODDS-Pacific Director Nancy Bresell said in the release. Twelve schools out of more than 100 from across the United States started the challenge.

The competition quizzed the cadets on their command curriculum, academic and current events knowledge. Working as a team, the cadets had only 30 seconds to read and answer questions.

The cadets left Yokota on Wedensday to attend the event, sponsored by the U.S. Army Cadet Command.
