YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — A Yokosuka sailor who pleaded guilty to recklessly endangering his child was sentenced Friday to 30 days’ confinement, reduction in rank and a loss of salary.

Petty Officer 1st Class Arthur Martin said during his court-martial that he and his 1-year-old son fell from the third story of their off-base apartment building Dec. 30 after a family fight.

Martin testified that after drinking two bottles of wine, he locked his wife, her sister and sister’s boyfriend out of the apartment and fell with his son in his arms while attempting to reach the second-floor fire escape.

Martin fell a second time with the child in his arms when he tripped while running to Yokosuka Naval Base for medical help.

His son received a fractured skull and minor bruising, he said.

Military judge Capt. Dennis Bengtson found Martin guilty of reckless endangerment and showing up to work later that morning “incapacitated” due to overindulging in alcohol.

Martin was reduced in rank to E-3. He also will forfeit $1,700 pay for one month, according to the Commander Naval Forces Japan public affairs office.

Remaining charges of spousal abuse and disobeying a military protective order were dismissed earlier in the week.

The CNFJ fire controlman was scheduled to get out of the Navy but was held back for the court-martial. He has served 10 years in the Navy.
