Yokosuka-based USS Stethem visits Nagasaki
The USS Stethem, which operates from Yokosuka Naval Base, arrived Friday for a scheduled port visit in Nagasaki, about 40 miles southeast of Sasebo Naval Base in southern Japan.
The ship’s 300 sailors will “participate in friendship building and goodwill generating activities” with their hosts, stated a 7th Fleet release Friday.
An Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, the Stethem can support anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare.
The 9,600-ton ship operates independently and also in conjunction with carrier strike groups and amphibious forces, the release stated.
