Winnefeld assumes command of Navy 6th Fleet
NAPLES, Italy — Vice Adm. James Winnefeld Jr. has assumed command of the U.S. Navy 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, from Vice Adm. John “Boomer” Stufflebeem, according to a Navy news release.
Winnefeld also becomes deputy commander of Naval Forces Europe, Joint Force Maritime Component commander Europe, commander Strike and Support Forces NATO, and Allied commander Joint Command Lisbon.
He comes to Naples from Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, Va., where he served as director of Joint Innovation and Experimentation Directorate. He assumed command Friday.
The news media was not notified in advance of Friday’s change of command ceremony because Stufflebeem “wanted it to be low-profile,” said Lt. Brian Badura, 6th Fleet spokesman. The command issued a press statement of the ceremony after it ended Friday.
Stufflebeem’s next assignment will be as director of Navy staff in Washington, D.C.
