The wife of a deployed U.S. soldier died and their two children were injured in vehicle accident Tuesday morning east of Aschaffenburg, according to a U.S. and German authorities.

The victims’ names have not been released pending notification of next of kin, according to a spokesman for U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach.

The Main Echo newspaper reported that the woman’s Dodge sport utility vehicle spun on the wet surface of the autobahn 3 between Waldaschaff and Weibersbrunn, veered to the right and struck a cargo truck that was parked at a roadside parking area at about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Fire personnel extracted the woman and children from the wreck, according to the newspaper’s Web site.

A German police report said the woman died instantly, and that the vehicle was totaled.

According to the police report, the couple’s 8-year-old son was severely injured in the crash, and was flown to Würzburg for treatment. The couple’s 12-year-old daughter was not badly injured and is being treated at a hospital in Aschaffenburg, the report said.

The soldier is a member of the 2nd Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment, headquartered in Illesheim, Germany, according to a statement from U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach.

The driver of the cargo truck was not badly injured, and was taken to a hospital in Aschaffenburg to be treated for shock, according to the German police report.
