WIESBADEN, Germany — Members of Wiesbaden’s Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program handed out cards to motorists leaving Clay Kaserne on Tuesday to discourage drinking and driving ahead of the long July Fourth holiday weekend.

One side of the card has local taxi and military police phone numbers and the other side entitles a designated driver to free nonalcoholic beverages while using the Army club system.

“It’s our way of showing we care about the community,” said Spc. Peter Maraman, the garrison’s BOSS president.

Military police and Army Substance Abuse Program representatives pitched in to help BOSS deliver the “don’t drink and drive” message.

Wiesbaden’s BOSS program has put on the event annually for seven years. Steve Eclavea, Morale, Welfare and Recreation/BOSS adviser, said the effort has now spread to other bases in Europe.

Eclavea said that after last year’s event, the garrison went 30 to 35 days without a drunken-driving incident. Usually the base experiences a reported incident about every five to 10 days, he said.

“A little impact helps,” Eclavea said.
