The commandant of cadets at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point has been tapped for a high position in the U.S. Central Command, the Pentagon announced Wednesday.

The Army chief of staff assigned Brig. Gen. Curtis M. Scaparrotti to director of operations at CENTCOM headquarters, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla.

CENTCOM is responsible for a wide swath of territory with 25 countries, including Iraq, Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa.
