RAF MILDENHALL — Shuttle service between RAF Mildenhall, RAF Lakenheath and Gatwick Airport will be discontinued during the weekdays, effective April 1.

Ridership on the shuttle is low because most travelers fly into and out of Heathrow Airport, Frances Allen, 48th Logistics and Readiness Squadron passenger clerk, said in a release.

"Coach Services, our contractor, came to us with a concern that the official duty passenger ridership was dwindling down to a point they weren’t breaking even — they were actually losing money," said Capt. Scott Bates, commander of Deployment and Distribution Flight with the 48th Logistics Readiness Squadron.

"We didn’t want to increase the fares from any of the other shuttle services we have, i.e. the Heathrow shuttle fare for obvious reasons, that would be just bad business," Bates said.

Officials said people traveling to and from Gatwick have several other options to meet their needs, including trains and taxis. Expenses for travel to and from the airport are reimbursable for servicemembers and Department of Defense civilian employees on official travel orders.

Bus service will continue on Saturdays and Sundays with the following schedule:
