CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Maj. Gen. Joseph F. Weber assumed command of the III Marine Expeditionary Force and Marine Corps Bases Japan on Tuesday.

In April, Weber was nominated to assume command of III MEF. Weber’s nomination was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Friday.

Weber is coming to Okinawa from Iraq, where he served as chief of staff for multinational forces.

He previously was assigned to Okinawa in 1982, then again from June 2002 to February 2004 as the 3rd Marine Division commanding general.

Weber joined the Marine Corps as a second lieutenant after graduating from Texas A&M University in 1972.

He replaces Lt. Gen. Robert Blackman, who left for Norfolk, Va., to assume command of Marine Corps Forces Atlantic.
