Warm weather forces ski race cancellation
Citing “unseasonably warm weather leading to unacceptable racing conditions,” Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation has canceled the Jeep 2007 U.S. Forces Europe Ski and Snowboard Championship.
The annual event, sponsored by Army Outdoor Recreation, was scheduled for March 10-11 at the NATO School and Kolben Ski Area in Oberammergau, Germany, according to an Installation Management Command-Europe news release on Friday.
“We regret to have to make this decision, but there has been very little snowfall this winter, and the forecast is for continued warm weather,” John O’Sullivan, IMCOM-Europe’s MWR recreation program manager, said in the release.
Friday’s low temperature in Oberammergau was above freezing, according to Yahoo! weather.
Although alternative locations were checked for availability and safety, none was found, and the decision to cancel was made to give participants a chance to cancel reservations, O’Sullivan said.
