Elizabeth Walker, superintendent for Heidelberg School District in Germany, will head the Mediterranean School District starting next school year, Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Europe announced Monday.

Walker, Ph.D., replaces Archie Bates, Ph.D., who has served as Mediterranean District superintendent since 2005. Bates will retire at the end of this school year after 43 years in teaching and educational service.

Bates has worked in the DODDS system since 1976, and was selected in 2002 as the Department of Defense Education Activity’s superintendent of the year. He was superintendent of the Kaiserslautern district at the time.

Walker’s acceptance of the Mediterranean position leaves a vacancy at the top of the Heidelberg District, which she has headed since 2001. A job announcement to fill the opening will be issued, according to a DODDS-Europe press release.
