SEOUL — A group of U.S. military community members helped make the Korean food staple kimchi for elderly and needy South Koreans on Monday, according to an Army news release.

Fifteen U.S. Army Garrison-Yongsan volunteers joined hundreds of Korean volunteers for the first day of the annual three-day event at the Sudo Girl’s High School, near Camp Coiner, according to the release.

The volunteers stuffed heads of cabbage with red pepper, garlic, radish and other vegetables to make the spicy dish, which Yongsan District will distribute.

"It was just an overwhelming sense of camaraderie," said Tracey Biggs, who volunteered along with her daughter and mother. "Koreans were so welcoming and warm, and it was a time to treasure."

The goal, according to the release, is to stuff 50,000 heads of cabbage to produce more than 150 tons of kimchi.
