VICENZA, Italy — When it comes to the Fisher House, Jonathan Ng is willing to sacrifice his body for a day. And he’s hoping that others back up their good will toward the organization by supporting his efforts.
Ng, a civilian who works for U.S. Army Garrison-Vicenza, plans to run in a marathon in Rome on March 22 with a goal of raising $5,000. Those interested can log onto a Web site (http://www.active.com/donate/teamfisherhouse/jusma2002) and contribute directly to the Fisher House organization.
"It’s not really a pledge," Ng said. "It’s not based on how far I run."
Ng does plan to finish the race, though. He competed in his first marathon in Padova in April and has enjoyed running for years. That includes recent stints as an Army officer in Germany with V Corps artillery and the 1st Armored Division. He left the service as a captain after serving with U.S. Army Garrison-Vicenza.
The 29-year-old from Baltimore said he decided if he was going to run in a marathon again, he’d like to use it to gain attention for a worthy organization.
"I think not enough people realize the benefits that servicemembers and their families are able to capture from Fisher House," he said.
Fisher House facilities are located near major U.S. medical centers that treat the U.S. military and their families. They’re designed as places for families to stay while the servicemember receives surgery or treatment.
He said he’s known colleagues — both servicemembers and civilians — whose families have benefited from stays in Fisher House facilities. "And if they think about it, I believe that most of those stationed in Europe have known someone as well."
