Vicenza-based soldier charged with murder in States
AVIANO, Italy -- A 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment soldier, who was in the U.S. for training, has been charged with 1st-degree murder in the death of a man authorities say he suspected of having had relations with his wife before she died, according to media reports.
Justin S. Cannon, 21, was on temporary duty attending airborne school in Georgia, Maj. Timothy Chavis, public affairs officer for the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team in Vicenza, Italy, said Monday. Cannon was on emergency leave in Missouri to attend the funeral of his wife, Amber.
Cannon was arrested the evening of Aug. 1, after attending his wife’s funeral in Belton, Mo., the Kansas City Star reported last week. He was charged with the murder of Michael Griggs, 24, whose body was found in Truman Lake, after he had been reported missing, the paper reported.
The paper quoted court documents as saying Cannon admitted during questioning that he threw a rock that hit Griggs in the back of the head, then carried the body to the lake. According to the paper, citing court documents, Cannon told a detective he was mad at Griggs for allegedly having sex with his wife, who, the Star reported, was 16 and would have been a junior in high school.
Amber Cannon was found dead July 27 at a motel in Grandview, Mo., the Star reported. It quoted her mother as saying she went there with friends to use the swimming pool. According to the paper, police have given no cause of death.
