Amistad receives $300K grant to help veterans

The nonprofit organization Amistad received a $300,000 grant from the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans Assistance to fund services for military veterans in El Paso.

The grant covers general assistance, employment training, housing options, transportation and other services.

?Amistad, formerly known as Project Amistad, is a transportation and social services agency that helps elderly residents, people with disabilities and at-risk adults.

It will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. on Friday at its administrative offices located at 12100 Esther Lama Drive in East El Paso. State Sen. José Rodríguez, D-El Paso, who supported the grant, will be in attendance.

The Texas Veterans Commission program has awarded more than $55 million in grants to nonprofit and government entities since 2009.
