CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A fire destroyed five vehicles and damaged eight more on Camp Schwab, Marine officials said Monday.

The fire at the Camp Schwab motor pool was reported at 3 a.m. Friday and was extinguished by firefighters from Marine Corps Bases Japan Fire Department within 15 minutes, 2nd Lt. Kurt Stahl said in a written response to a Stars and Stripes’ query.

"Eight other vehicles received repairable damage," Stahl said, adding that the incident is under investigation.

Local press accounts reported the vehicles, located near the base boundary fence, burned for about an hour and explosions alarmed Okinawans who live nearby.

"As a matter of Department of Defense policy, we cannot release details about an ongoing investigation or speculate on the cause of the fire," Stahl said.
