YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan — Hoping to shed light on a problem that’s often difficult to diagnose, organizers are offering a hands-on way — literally — to win a car in recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

A 1994 Nissan Silvia will be given away April 28 during the “Stand Against Child Abuse” event sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s Tokyo Alumnae Chapter. It includes two years of Japan Compulsory Insurance, or JCI, and a free inspection.

It’s among several functions being conducted through Yokota’s Family Advocacy Program, which has set up information booths at the Base Exchange and commissary all month to enhance awareness.

“It’s really a show of appreciation for our children,” said Hugh Clark, the Family Advocacy outreach manager. “We all know children are our most precious commodity, and this month is really about edifying them and lifting them up.”

The car give-away contest, set for 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., is to take place in the Family Support Center parking lot near the Yokota Community Center. To win, people must stand with their hands on the car all day. They’ll get 10-minute breaks every two hours.

“If they survive, then we’ll put their names in a hat and draw for the car,” Clark said.

Base agencies such as the Family Support Center, Family Advocacy, Health and Wellness Center, and Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Prevention and Treatment program also are expected to appear at the event.

On April 24, Family Advocacy and the Yokota High School drama class are staging a “Puppets Prevent Abuse” show for first- and second-graders. It’s scheduled for 9 a.m. at the Yokota High School theater.

“The puppet show is designed to teach young kids about child abuse in a nonthreatening way,” Clark said.

Family Advocacy offers free classes that deal with stress management, parenting, anger management and other issues.

The organization also has a full-time registered nurse, Janet Kokosinski, available to expectant parents or those with toddlers up to age 3. She frequently visits homes to provide guidance and free Similac baby formula.

Kelly & Kelly Auto Sales and Insurance Agency, an off-base company, is donating the car. To register for the contest, call Family Advocacy at DSN 225-3648.
