Watch the new 'Top Gun: Maverick' trailer

By STARS AND STRIPES Published: July 19, 2019

The "Top Gun: Maverick" trailer reveals a few things about the upcoming sequel to the 1986 hit movie about naval aviators.

Tom Cruise, who plays the title character, surprised audiences at Comic-Con in San Diego with the trailer Thursday.

The movie's due out June 26, 2020. Here are a few tidbits from the trailer to tide you over.

1. Maverick is still a captain after more than 30 years. Pilot retention, indeed. The trailer features Ed Harris' character saying, "You can't get a promotion, you won't retire and despite your best efforts, you refuse to die. You should be at least a two-star admiral by now, yet here you are — captain. Why is that?"

"It's one of life's mysteries, sir," says Maverick.

It looks like Harris' character will be some kind of antagonist since he tells Maverick "your kind is headed for extinction," which gives Maverick an opportunity to land a, "maybe so, sir, but not today."

2. There's a lot of recurring imagery from the first movie: Singing sailors, shirtlessness and Maverick's motorcycle.

3. A military funeral is involved (but it's not Maverick's, he's attending).

4. Jennifer Connelly appears to provide that loving feeling to Maverick this time around.

5. Key flying scenes take place in the mountains.
