(Tribune News Service) — A search and rescue operation is underway in the eastern Pacific Ocean for a sailor reported overboard from the San Diego-based guided-missile cruiser Lake Erie, according to the U.S. Navy.

The unidentified sailor was reported missing after failing to report for duty Sunday morning, a statement from the Navy’s 3rd Fleet said. Extensive searches of the ship’s interior were unsuccessful.

The Lake Erie is conducting operations as part of the John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group.

Ships and helicopters from the strike group and the U.S. Coast Guard are conducting the search.
