Sailor found dead at Naval Station Norfolk drowned

Petty Officer 3rd Class Joshua Johnson was found dead at Naval Station Norfolk on Aug. 10. According to the Navy, there was no sign of foul play in Johnson's death.

NORFOLK, Va. (Tribune News Service) — A sailor whose body was found at Naval Station Norfolk died of an accidental drowning, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Norfolk concluded.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Joshua Johnson, 22, died Aug. 10, said Donna Price, district administrator for the office.

There are no indications of foul play, Navy spokesman George Bieber said in an email Aug. 13. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is still investigating, said Naval Information Forces spokeswoman Megan Shutka in an email Aug. 29.

Johnson was an information systems technician from Orange Park, Fla. He enlisted in June 2015, according to a document from the Navy.

He was assigned to Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic in January 2016, Bieber said in a news release. He worked in the operation’s transport division as a technician and advanced to petty officer third class in December 2016.
