Military families and retirees will soon have new vision and dental plans to choose from, the Department of Defense said.

The DOD, in partnership with the U.S. Office of Personnel Management and the Defense Health Agency, announced this month that the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program would be offered to Tricare eligible retirees and their families this year for the first time.

The program will be offered during the 2018 federal benefits open season, officials said. Active-duty families will be eligible to enroll in FEDVIP vision insurance.

The FEDVIP program will replace the Tricare Retiree Dental Program, which ends on Dec. 31, officials said. Those enrolled in the current Tricare dental program must choose a new plan through FEDVIP to have coverage in 2019. Enrollment is not automatic.

DOD officials said the announcement affects 1.63 million beneficiaries enrolled in the Tricare program and offers a choice to an additional 1.3 million eligible retired beneficiaries not currently enrolled in the program.

The federal benefits open season begins in November and lasts roughly one month, officials said. For more information, visit TRICARE.benefeds.com.
