SAN DIEGO (Tribune News Service) — A 19-year-old South Carolina man killed in a motorcycle crash Wednesday morning in Carlsbad was a Camp Pendleton Marine, authorities said Thursday.
Ryan Wayne Martin lost control of his motorcycle around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday on an Interstate 5 on-ramp and slid across the roadway before being struck and run over by a pickup, according to the California Highway Patrol and county Medical Examiner’s Office.
Authorities said Martin was riding a BMW motorcycle on the southbound on-ramp from Vista Way when he crashed for unknown reasons. The Marine was struck by the Ford F-150 pickup near Las Flores Drive.
The driver of that truck, a 42-year-old Oceanside woman who was not injured, “quickly came to a stop” after the collision, CHP Officer Kevin Smale said.
“Firefighters and paramedics lifted the truck off of (Martin) and moved him onto the shoulder, off the roadway,” the Medical Examiner’s Office said in a statement. “He was confirmed dead at the scene.”
The Marine, who resided in Oceanside and was six days shy of his 20th birthday, was pronounced dead at 7:04 a.m. of multiple blunt force injuries, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.
