FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (Tribune News Service) — A man who was shot last week outside the Fayetteville Veterans Affairs Medical Center remains in critical condition, his wife said Tuesday.
Michael Walker, 64, was shot Friday afternoon when he stepped outside to call his wife after being treated at the urgent care at the VA Medical Center on Ramsey Street, officials said.
Police arrested Jasmine Laquanmoyea Thomas, 27, following the shooting. According to an affidavit filed by the FBI in federal court, Thomas was brought to the hospital for mental health help.
Chris Walker said she was on the phone with her husband and heard a lot of commotion. She said it sounded like her husband was far from the phone.
"I heard the siren of first responders but did not think anything of it because he was at the VA," she said.
Fifteen minutes later, she said, she received a call from the VA telling her that Michael had been shot.
"I said to the person on the phone, 'What do you mean my husband has been shot?'" Walker said.
She said for a moment she was in disbelief but rushed to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where her husband was being treated.
When Thomas arrived at the VA, she was carrying a duffel bag with ammunition, according to authorities.
Walker said when she heard about that, she knew her husband had saved the lives of others.
"My husband is a hero," she said. "If the shooter would have made it inside the number of lives that could have been lost.''
She said her husband is in intensive care in critical condition at Cape Fear Valley. She described Michael as a good family man with strong faith and asked for prayers for her family.
Walker served in the Air Force and also worked with the Army's Special Forces, she said.
Thomas faces a charge of assault with intent to commit murder. She remains in the Cumberland County Detention Center.
