WASHINGTON — An individual is being treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound after military police responded to reports of gunshots Tuesday morning at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif., according to the Marine Corps.
“An individual sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound at approximately 8:30 a.m. The individual is currently being treated and will be transported to a medical facility. There are no other injuries reported at this time and this incident is still under investigation,” according to a statement by Capt. Nicole Plymale, a base spokeswoman.
The shelter-in-place order at the base has been lifted. A base spokesman did not know whether the individual was a Marine or civilian.
The Marine Corps stated earlier Tuesday that military police responded to reports of gunshots at 6:30 a.m. and the area was cordoned off.
The base, located about 150 miles from Los Angeles, is the Marine Corps’ premier training facility and the largest Marine base in the world at 932 square miles. More than 11,000 Marines and sailors are station at the combat center, according to the base website.
