The Guard hits the ripe old age of 377 today. How so old? According to National Guard’s history page, it's because they trace their roots back to the village green in Salem, Mass., on Dec. 13, 1636. Virginia Army National Guard UH-72 helicopter air crews based in Sandston conduct water hoist training with Chesterfield Fire & EMS Scuba Rescue Team personnel Sept. 10, 2013, at Lake Chesdin on the border of Chesterfield County and Dinwiddie County. The training was part of an ongoing effort designed to enhance the emergency response capability of each organization in support of the commonwealth's ability to react to and support emergency management operations.
