Federal agencies in the Washington area will open Wednesday on a three-hour delay as the nation’s capital continues to deal with the aftermath of a massive winter storm that dumped up to 30 inches of snow on the region.

The Office of Personnel Management’s decision, announced Tuesday night, includes an option for unscheduled leave or telework for federal employees.

“Employees should plan to arrive for work no more than three hours than they would be expected to arrive,” OPM said in a statement on its website.

Emergency employees are expected to report to work as scheduled unless directed otherwise by their agencies, the statement said.

Non-emergency employees will be granted an excused absence for up to three hours past their expected arrival time, or, in accordance with their agency’s policies, may notify their supervisor of their intent to use earned annual leave, compensatory time off, credit hours, sick leave, leave without pay, an alternative work schedule or unscheduled telework.

Telework employees must be prepared to work for the entire workday or take unscheduled leave, or a combination of both, the statement said. Employees on pre-approved leave for the entire workday, or those who requested unscheduled leave, will be charged leave for the entire day.
