Career intelligence officer Lora Shiao will be named acting director of the National Counterterrorism Center until a permanent director is confirmed, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence confirmed on Saturday.
Shiao, currently the center's executive director, will be officially named to the position on Monday, ODNI spokeswoman Susan Meisner said. She will also serve as deputy director, and is expected to take up her dual positions on April 3, Meisner said.
Shiao will take over from Russell Travers, a highly respected career professional who was removed as NCTC acting director by Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell several days ago, according to two former U.S. officials briefed on the matter.
Travers, who has more than 40 years of government service, will be retiring.
President Donald Trump has announced his intention to nominate Christopher Miller, an Army Special Forces veteran serving as a Pentagon Special Operations and counterterrorism official, as the center's next director.
