U.S. Rear Adm. Kendall Card relieved British Royal Navy Commodore Duncan Potts on Wednesday as commander of Combined Task Force 158, operating in the Persian Gulf, according to a U.S. Navy news release.

Command of the task force, responsible primarily for the safety and security of two Iraqi oil platforms in the Gulf, rotates among Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The protection of the platforms, called Khawr Al Amaya Oil Terminal and Al Basrah Oil Terminal, is critical because about 90 percent of Iraq’s gross domestic product passes through them, the release stated.

CTF 158 also works jointly with Iraqi sailors and Marines, trained by members of the Navy Transition Team, based in nearby Umm Qasr.
