U.S. Special Olympics team to visit Yokota on way to world games
YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan — Base residents are invited to help greet and assist the U.S. Special Olympics team at Yokota’s Air Mobility Command terminal at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
About 280 team members will transit through Yokota’s 730th Air Mobility Squadron en route to Nagano Prefecture, Japan, to compete in the winter Special Olympics from Feb. 26 to March 5. Once there, athletes will compete in alpine and cross-country skiing, figure skating, floor hockey, snowboarding, snowshoeing and speed skating, according to a base news release.
Volunteers are needed to carry baggage, escort athletes and help with refreshments, according to a base news report. Yokota’s honor guard will help honor the athletes as base school children hold posters and signs to support the athletes.
