U.S. ships taking part in the 2005 Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training exercise arrived in Thailand this week to launch the second phase of the multipart maritime exercise.

The flotilla of participating U.S. ships include the Sasebo-based USS Fort McHenry and USS Safeguard salvage ship. Navy P-3 and SH-60 aviation units from Japan also are participating with Army veterinarians and Coast Guard units.

During the sequential training, U.S. servicemembers work with counterparts from the country with which they are training. The exercise will continue this summer in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines.

A segment in Singapore finished earlier this month, Navy officials said.
