BALAD, Iraq — A 25-year-old prisoner in Iraq died on Sunday after allegedly being beaten in an “altercation” with other prisoners, officials said Wednesday.

The unnamed man was taken to an Army medical hospital on Balad Air Base, but died while being treated for his injuries, the military said.

The prisoner “died from severe head injuries suffered during the altercation,” a U.S. military release read. “He was pronounced dead at 1:13 p.m. by an attending physician.”

The Army’s Criminal Investigation Command, known as CID, is investigating. The man’s remains will be transferred to his family after an autopsy, a standard practice in the U.S. custody system in Iraq.
