TOKYO — The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo has announced several holiday closings for Japanese and U.S. holidays this month and next.

The embassy and all consulates will be closed on Dec. 23 for the Emperor of Japan’s birthday, a national holiday in Japan. Since Christmas and New Year’s Day both fall on a Sunday they will be observed on the following Mondays, so the embassy will be closed Dec. 26 and Jan. 2.

In January, the embassy will close Jan. 9 for the Japanese holiday Adult’s Day; and again Jan 16 to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.

In addition to the embassy in Tokyo, the State Department has consulates in Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, Fukuoka and Naha. All will follow the embassy’s holiday schedule.

An embassy notice reminded people that the days before and after holiday closures tend to be very crowded.
