CAMBRIDGE — A British man serving a life sentence for murder escaped from British authorities during a day visit to a local department store, authorities said.

Mark Ryder, 37, was on an escorted visit to the Debenham’s store in Grafton Centre on Oct. 12 when he walked away from his prison escorts, according to a news release from the Suffolk Constabulary.

Ryder is a white man, about 5 feet 5 inches tall with shaved brown hair that is graying on the sides, according to the constabulary. He was last seen wearing a light long-sleeved Lonsdale sweatshirt, blue jeans and white sneakers.

He was serving his sentence at Highpoint Prison when he was released on a day pass with police escorts. Stars and Stripes was unable to reach the prison for further comment.

Anyone who spots Ryder is urged to contact police at 999.

Three men commit armed robbery at post officeEAST BERGHOLT — Suffolk authorities are investigating an armed robbery at a post office in this village.

Three men entered the post office on the morning of Oct. 13 clad in ski masks, while one was armed with a shotgun, according to a Suffolk Constabulary news release.

An undisclosed quantity of money was stolen, and the suspects fled in a dark car, according to the Suffolk Constabulary. Authorities did not provide a description of the assailants. No one was injured in the incident.

Military gear taken from airmen’s homes in BrandonBRANDON — The Suffolk Constabulary is investigating the theft of military gear from two homes in separate burglaries, according to a 48th Fighting Wing spokesman.

Both burglaries occurred Oct. 5 in Brandon, which is home to scores of American servicemembers serving at RAFs Lakenheath, Mildenhall and Feltwell.

RAF Lakenheath spokesman Airman 1st Class Michael Hess said the one burglary resulted in the theft of a gas mask while the second left an airman without his chemical protective outfit.
