Two sailors died and two others were injured Friday when they fell overboard as their submarine was pulling away from pier in Devon Port in Plymouth, England, a Navy official said Friday.

The four sailors from the USS Minneapolis-St. Paul were retrieved by fellow crewmembers and British authorities and taken to a local hospital, where two of them were pronounced dead, said Lt. Chris Servello, a spokesman with the Navy’s 6th Fleet-Naval Forces Europe.

The two surviving sailors were treated for minor injuries and discharged from the hospital, Servello said.

Names of the deceased sailors are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The submarine had just ended a weeklong port visit to Plymouth. It currently remains at sea.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
