Two Marines arrested by Okinawan authorities
OKINAWA CITY — Two Marines were in Okinawa police custody Monday in two unrelated off-base incidents over the weekend.
First Sgt. Edward Cardenas II, assigned to the 1st Marine Air Wing, is being held after police say he used his cell phone to take a photo up a woman’s skirt Saturday afternoon in the Jusco mall in the Mihama district of Chatan. According to the police report, he was spotted sneaking the photo of the 20-year-old woman at 2:25 p.m. A witness called police, who apprehended Cardenas inside the mall.
According to a police spokesman, Cardenas admitted to the accusation and said he was ashamed of what he had done. Police referred a public-nuisance charge to the Naha District Public Prosecutor’s Office on Monday.
Also on Saturday, a 24-year-old Marine officer was taken into custody after police say he wandered onto the property of an Okinawa city man while drunk.
A police spokesman said 2nd Lt. Hamilton N. Ashworth, assigned to Camp Hansen, allegedly climbed over the front gate of a home in the Uechi district of the city and wandered around the yard. A neighbor called police about a suspicious foreigner on the property at 11:25 a.m., and Ashworth was apprehended at the scene.
The police spokesman said Ashworth appeared to be intoxicated, but he refused to take a breath test. A charge of trespassing was referred to the prosecutor’s office Monday.
