TIKRIT, Iraq — Soldiers at an American installation near Hawijah, Iraq, Thursday stopped a dump truck loaded with about 1,600 pounds of explosives from attacking a gate at the base, the 25th Infantry Division reported Friday.

Three insurgents were killed and four others captured when soldiers from Company A, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, fired on the truck as it approached an entrance to Forward Operating Base McHenry early in the morning, division public affairs officers said.

Soldiers also called in a Kiowa attack helicopter to target a second, smaller truck loaded with grenades, two AK-47 rifles, two machine guns with ammunition and several rocket-propelled grenades with a launcher.

No coalition forces members were injured in the attack, according to the release.
