CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Tropical Storm Vongfong formed overnight Thursday and was forecast to pass south of Tokyo midday Saturday.

At 6 p.m. Friday, Vongfong was moving north-northeast at 14 mph with 58-mph sustained winds and 75-mph gusts.

It was forecast to rumble past Yokosuka Naval Base some 135 miles to its south and about 170 miles south of Yokota Air Base by 11 a.m. Saturday, packing winds of similar strength at its center. It was expected move out of the Tokyo area rapidly after that, weather officials said.

Yokota expected winds of 25 mph and gusts up to 35 mph to go with half an inch to an inch of rain, a base spokeswoman said. The same was forecast for Yokosuka, according to the base’s Web site.

A 7th Fleet spokeswoman said one Navy ship north of Vongfong moved west out of the storm’s track. The ship was not identified.

Vongfong is a Chinese word for wasp.
