The top U.S. medical officer in Iraq has been given his first star, officials said Tuesday.

Brig. Gen. Joseph Caravalho Jr., Multi-National Force—Iraq surgeon, was promoted at a ceremony at the Al Faw Palace this week. Caravalho is deployed as part of the XVIII Airborne Corps.

Caravalho’s family witnessed the ceremony via video teleconference, officials said. The ceremony was presided over by Lt. Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III, commander of Multi-National Corps—Iraq.

Caravalho, a native of Hawaii, has served in both the Rangers and Special Forces.
