TOKYO — Vehicle owners in Japan must have their road taxes paid, registration and insurance up to date, and proper U.S. Forces Japan decals affixed by June 1.

Road tax costs, based on vehicle category and license plate number, are as follows:

Letter code corresponds to the one on your license plate.

1A (Motorcycles 125cc and below) — 500 yen

A (Motorcycles 126cc and above) — 1,000 yen

HA/HB, 1B, 40A or 50A (mini cars) — 3,000 yen

44, 51-59, 77-78, 500-502 (regular cars) — 7,500 yen

33Y or 300Y (cars less than 4.5-liter engine) — 19,000 yen

H33 E or Y, H300 E or Y (cars greater than 4.5-liter engine) — 22,000 yen

11, 88, 100 and 800 (other engine sizes) — 32,000 yen

Vehicle owners will need the following documents at a minimum. Check your local base office for more information.

• JCI insurance

• Liability insurance

• Registration

• 2003 road tax receipt

Here are the times, dates and locations for military personnel in Japan to pay road taxes and update necessary forms and records. Some installations already have concluded their registration periods.

Camp Zama

When: April 13-16

Where: Camp Zama Community Club Firelight Lounge

Time: 9-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-2:30 p.m.

Slots for paying the tax are based on the vehicle owner’s last name. The program is set for the following dates:

Last name begins with:

A through E, April 13;

F through K, April 14;

L through R, April 15;

S through Z, April 16;

All mini-cars with yellow plates and two-wheeled vehicles, April 16.

North Dock

When: April 12

Where: North Dock, Building 331, Provost Marshal’s Activity

Time: 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m.

Tokyo residents

When: Prior to June 1

Where: Provost Marshal Activity Tokyo, Building 1, Room 111

Time: 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m.

Atsugi Naval Air Facility

When: April 19-23

Where: Old Mini Mart

Time: 9-11 a.m. and 12:30-2 p.m.

The office fills up fast, so people are advised to go to the Yamato tax office, five minutes from east gate. Maps are available at the Vehicle Registration Office. People must bring all the paperwork for every car they own.

Negishi Housing Area

When: April 26-27

Where: Morale, Welfare and Recreation classroom

Time: 9-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-2:30 p.m.

Vehicle owners can also go to the prefectural tax office to pay road tax. For more information, call the base’s Vehicle Registration Office at DSN 243-5011.

Sasebo Naval Base

When: April 19-21

Where: Showboat Theater

Time: 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-3:30 p.m.

Vehicle owners can also go to the prefectural tax office to pay the road tax. Vehicles with “A" plates and motorcycles must go to the second floor of the Sasebo City office building.

Iwakuni MCAS

When: through April 30

Where: Iwakuni City Hall, fourth floor

Time: Working hours

Residents with heavy vehicles can make payments on the first floor of the government office building adjacent to Sinfonia Iwakuni.

After taxes are paid, personnel can report to pass and registration at the Provost Marshal’s Office, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, to pick up the 2004 base decal.

Yokosuka Naval Base

Yokosuka’s vehicle road tax sessions occurred March 29-31 and April 5-7.

Misawa Air Base

When: April 19-22

Where: Mokuteki Community Center Ballroom

Time: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Vehicle owners pay according to the first letter of their last name:

A-E on April 19;

F-L on April 20;

M-S on April 21;

T-Z on April 22.

The makeup day is April 23 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call the 35th Security Forces Squadron Pass and Registration office at DSN 226-3995.

Yokota Air Base

When: April 12-16

Where: Yujo Community Center

Time: 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Tax Office will collect road taxes from Yokota residents April 12-16 for regular vehicles, and April 12-13 for mini-cars and motorcycles. Vehicle owners are advised to show up early as the lines occasionally close before 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Additional documents required to complete vehicle registration are: Japanese inspection certificate (Shaken-Sho), military registration (374th Airlift Wing Form 12/DD Form 430), and 2003 U.S. Forces Japan base decal. Owners missing any of these documents should call Pass and Registration at DSN 225-8932 or DSN 225-8914.

All fees must be paid in yen.

Vehicle owners may also pay road taxes at any off-base bank or post office prior to May 31; bring required vehicle documents beforehand to Pass and Registration (Building 316, Room 124) to obtain a road tax application.

Vehicles that don’t have the 2004 installation decal by June 1 will be stopped and cited for failure to maintain base registration, resulting in loss of driving privileges.
