YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea — Polish up those résumés, kids. Summer job season starts Friday, as bases throughout South Korea kick off their summer hire programs and offer students a chance at on-base employment.

Applications for the program, which has run for at least the last 10 years, will be accepted until April 30, officials said.

Each of the four U.S. military regions in South Korea has a separate summer hire program run through civilian personnel offices, officials said.

This year, said Area II coordinator Bill Zeigler, the program will be split into three sessions. High schoolers will be offered a session between June 14 and July 10, or from July 12 through Aug. 7.

A session for college students spending the summer with family in South Korea runs May 17 through Aug. 7.

“College students will be placed as they arrive in country, and it may be on or after 17 May,” Zeigler said.

To be eligible, job seekers must be students between the ages of 14 and 23, be covered by the Status of Forces Agreement, and reside in one of the four military areas in South Korea. Applications are available at local schools and civilian personnel offices.

Pay is usually around $5 per hour, officials said. Most students apply to get specific work experience in a field they might pursue.

In Area II, which includes Yongsan Garrison, officials typically fill about 100 positions each summer, ranging from clerical work to physical labor. The college sessions typically attract between 20 and 30 students, officials said.
